2003-05-27 - Power Technologies division wins two top safety awards for 2003 one for the third consecutive year

ABB Limited’s Power Technologies Division based in Stone, Staffordshire, has won two RoSPA Gold Awards for Occupational Health and Safety for 2003. The Awards recognise the high standards of Occupational Health and Safety performance achieved by the Power Systems Projects and Utility Services business areas. For the Utility Services business this is the third successive year in which it has been chosen for the award.

The Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) award scheme is one of the UK’s primary schemes for the monitoring and rewarding of health and safety programmes undertaken by British businesses. The Gold Award recognises a consistently high standard of health and safety performance sustained over a number of years.

According to Trevor Gregory, Head of the ABB Power Technologies business, The RoSPA awards are not just about demonstrating our low accident record, they prove that we really do have excellent health and safety systems in place. They reinforce our firm belief that commitment to good health and safety is good for business. We strive towards continuous improvement in all aspects of our business and therefore take great pride from the recognition given by RoSPA towards the positive safety culture now firmly established within ABB.

The Utility Services business employs some 450 people and concentrates on Energy Solutions and Asset Services. It is the UK’s largest utility network service provider covering everything from finance and design to installation and maintenance including high and low voltage power distribution, street lighting and utility network services. It operates from three main centres as well as many project locations across the UK.

The Power Systems Projects business undertakes the installation and commissioning of high voltage sub-stations. It uses both its own engineering expertise and sub-contracted engineering staff and is responsible for maintaining the highest health and safety standards on all its projects. There is a strong emphasis on health and safety training to nationally recognised standards and all the relevant guidelines are now instantly accessible through the company Intranet to support managers and supervisors wherever they are.
